|Sbek Thom (large leather puppets) pictured in 2010 at Chaktomuk Theatre|
The editor of the UNESCO World Heritage magazine got in touch today asking if they could use one of my pictures of Sbek Thom in their upcoming issue that focuses on the arts in Cambodia. Of course they can. Anything that promotes the arts in Cambodia is grist to my mill. Sbek Thom is the traditional large leather shadow puppet theatre, proclaimed as a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible
Heritage of Humanity in 2005, and featured on the list of
the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as of 2009. It was almost wiped out under the Khmer Rouge but is making a comeback and four theatre troupes are now practicing this sacred artform.
