Sothy's visions

Chhim Sothy at one of his exhibitions in February 2009
One of my fave artists in Phnom Penh is Chhim Sothy and he has his latest exhibition, Beyond Abstract, kicking off at Meta House (near Wat Botum) tonight, starting at 6pm. Sothy's traditional work is intricate and detailed and simply brilliant. However he is never slow to move into more contemporary styles as well, and in this, the last month at the original Meta House location before they move, he has put his dreamlike visions of the past and present onto canvas. He is one of the country's hardest working artists without doubt and his traditional style paintings, usually acrylic on canvas, bring figures like Hanuman, Rama, Lakshmana and Ravana alive with his flowing brush strokes and intricate artwork that regularly feature scenes from the Ramayana epic and Buddhist themes. Find out more about Chhim Sothy here.
